  • Safety Swim

The purpose of the safety swim is to assess participants swimming abilities. Lifeguards are not there to teach participants how to swim, instead, we're identifying weak, non-swimmers, and strong swimmers to determine who is safe to participate in high-risk deep-water activities. A competent swimmer is someone who can confidently swim 25m unaided, without goggles, lifejackets, assistance from a parent, or touching the pool edge during the swim.

    Safety Swim Standard (Step-by-step)
To pass, all steps must be completed:

    1. Jump & Submerge. Be able to confidently resurface after submerging.
    2. Swim to Cone. Swim back to the wall in deep water.
    3. Tread Water for 15 Seconds. Stay afloat in deep water.
    4. Swim Back to Wall. Complete the swim back confidently.

    FAQS

Participant(s) completed the 25m but the lifeguard failed them, why?
If a participant did not confidently complete the 4 step standard, lifeguards would of failed the participant. If the participant is already struggling to complete 25m, it is not safe to participate in the waterslides.

    Can I do a retest?
Yes, we can retest at the discretion of a lifeguard supervisor, however whilst lifeguards encourage participation we prioritise safety. Water and water depth does not discriminate, our focus is safety first and foremost and we will never compromise on safety.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is there an age rule (10+)?

Our slides are fast, spinny, and end in deep water. The 10+ rule originates from the guidance of the slide manufacturer and the national GSPO (Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations). It’s about safety.

  • My child is tall enough, why can’t they ride?

Height alone isn’t enough. Kids under 10 can still struggle with deep water or strong currents at the slide exit. The rule helps make sure they’re ready for the speed, spins, and water depth.

  • Do you do a swim test?

Yes! Swim ability is part of the requirement. Even after turning 10, kids & adults need to pass a deep-water swim check before using the big slides.

  • What can younger kids do while they wait?

    Plenty!

    1. WIBIT inflatable obstacle course

    2. Splash pad & water play area

    3. Water features designed to build skills & confidence

    4. Good news: these areas are being upgraded soon as part of our rejuvenation works!

  • Who sets these rules

SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre follows GSPO guidelines and the slide manufacturer’s recommendations. As a Platinum Pool, we go above and beyond to make sure the fun stays safe. Should an issue occur, this is one of the first things authorities will review.
